November 11th, 2021
On November 11, Waterloo Region District School Board joins fellow Canadians in honouring our country’s many brave war heroes, both past and present, whose sacrifices have ensured the freedoms and lifestyle we are privileged to enjoy today.
WRDSB schools are acknowledging the contributions of all veterans including those identifying as Indigenous, Black, Sikh, Chinese, French, Jewish, Muslim, LGBTQ+, and multiple marginalized communities who served for Canada, who too often go unacknowledged in historical teachings and commentary.
We remember so that the sacrifices of all those who have fallen are never forgotten.
We will take this opportunity to increase learning and awareness of our storied history in relation to our present day liberties, advancements, strengths, and opportunities as a nation. It is important for us as a board to pause on Remembrance Day to reflect on the past, acknowledge the challenges of our present, and hope for a more peaceful future.
We have recognized various communities throughout Remembrance Week. Starting November 8 with Indigenous Veteran’s Day, we recognize those in Canada’s Indigenous communities who served during wars and conflict.
National flags at all WRDSB schools and other board facilities will be lowered on November 11 to mark Remembrance Day.
Remembering Virtually
Virtual Remembrance Day themed gatherings, presentations, class activities, and art projects are also happening in our school board as our students and staff join together to show respect and gratitude for our heroes.
In-person school ceremonies will be conditional on COVID-19 measures that are in place at our schools.
