June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) looks forward to commemorating National Indigenous History Month throughout June, and to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st. This important time allows us to honour the voices, experiences, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and to reflect on their strength, knowledge, and continued presence across the land.

Throughout the month, students and staff are encouraged to explore the cultural richness and diverse histories of Indigenous Peoples. The WRDSB Indigenous Education Branch has created and gathered a variety of resources to support learning, centred on the message “We Are All Connected”. This theme was also highlighted during the recent WRDSB Indigenous Voices Symposium and reminds us of the importance of relationships, community, and shared responsibility.

While June shines a spotlight on Indigenous histories, this learning continues year-round. We invite students and families to join us throughout June using the links and resources provided below.

National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21

National Indigenous Peoples Day is recognized annually on June 21. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. The Government of Canada chose June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day (formerly known as National Aboriginal Day) because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice for Indigenous Peoples.
